Instead of taking time off of your college education, you may want to consider another option that won’t put you a year behind: distance learning.

Many colleges and universities offer classes online as part of a degree program, and some even offer entire programs online. If you’re thinking of taking time away from campus to work or travel, you can still go to school no matter where in the world you end up.

Taking time off of college can quickly turn into a pricey trap. When you take even a semester off, you loose the six-month grace period before you have to start paying back your student loans. This grace period is important to get your feet on the ground, find a job, and start budgeting to get those loans paid off. However, taking time to get off campus is important for many students to avoid burnout – and all of its side-effects – and dropping out. Distance learning offers a workable compromise for students of all majors.
